A 14 year old Swedish girl temporarily got married to her 21
year old boyfriend by mistake, but the marriage was cancelled when the
authorities realized that the girl has not attained the legal age of marriage.
The girl arrived in Sweden as an asylum seeker with her boyfriend.
They were then given a place to stay by the Social Services in the city of Gothenburg.
The couple stayed together in an apartment until they were moved to a new
municipality where officials objected to the minor staying with an adult in the
same apartment.
Before they were relocated, the young couple had already
been married under the city laws but the marriage was cancelled when tax
authorities were informed about the couple’s circumstances. The girl has since
been moved to a separate home, and the couple is now staying apart.
It’s not like the girl and her boyfriend were strangers.
They came to Sweden together, so the officials in favor of the girl’s marriage
argued that staying with your partner provides security, while officials
opposing the cohabitation of the pair argued that it is not safe for an
under-age girl to stay with an adult who is married to her.
Whatever the case, if the girl had been of legal age, the
chance of their marriage getting revoked would be very small.
A UN report claims that child marriage is prevalent in
developing countries, and over 142 million teenage girls around the world will
get married within the next 10 years.
