Shirts labeled “Give this jersey to your woman. It’s her job” worn by members of the Indonesian football team Pusamania Borneo FC, have caused outrage on social media. The incident happened on International Women’s Day and a media storm from Indonesian Women’s Rights groups ensued.
The manufacturers of the shirts, an apparel wear company called Salvo Sports said it was not their intention to send out a sexist message or to disrespect women.
When it seemed like Salvo was not going to respond to the incident or apparently unaware of the media storm that the shirts caused, a Twitter user tweeted:
“They are still not aware the outrage these washing instructions cause”.
However, Salvo responded to the media storm on Twitter with an apology and interpretation of the message from their side.
Salvo reasoned that women are more capable of washing a shirt the right way, since they pay attention to details, therefore men should seek the services of a woman to do the job properly.
The attempt to explain the washing instructions didn’t help matters but it triggered an avalanche of more criticism from Twitter. Some people thought the explanation borders on an insult.
A similar incident happened in Italy when the apparel maker Shoeshine distributed some cardigans with instructions to “give them to your mother, it’s her job”
