Singapore Girls Explain Why They Joined the Army

A new TV series “Into the Fray: Making of a Female Soldier” features Singapore girl soldiers, and what they do in the training ground. If you have ever watched a war movie, you will encounter scenes that boys face in the training ground – such as painting their faces with camouflage, training in the mud and sleeping in cranky bunk beds.Well, it turns out girls also face the same situations.

In this post, we look at girls interviewed by CyberpioneerTV, explaining why they decided to join the Army. In Singapore, able-bodied boys are required to sign up for the army during war times, but girls have a choice of not signing up. Singapore is not fighting a war at the moment, so recruitment may not be compulsory for boys. Joining the army during peace times is usually an option. But what motivates a girl to go for a career that is usually male-dominated, and for that matter, a risky, dangerous and tough career in the armed forces that requires a lot of physical strength, fitness and endurance? Let’s hear what the girls have to say about the army:

Rebekah: “I wanted to be a soldier since I was a kid. You know those kind, like, the kids, they’re like ‘I want to be an astronaut, I want to be a fire fighter. So I want to be a soldier’”

Nuraishah: “The reason why I joined the army is because it is a thing I wanted to do since secondary school. It’s because I was in NCC (National Cadet Corps) Air”

Emmeline: “I started to have a passion for flying when I joined Youth Flying Club in year one. Once you’ve tasted flying, there’s no going back, it’s that kind of thing. You really want it”

Anithra: “After I did my degree, I went to do an internship. It was then that I realised the corporate world is not for me. So then I decided I’m going to put my foot down. I’m going to do what I really want to do in life. I’m going to join the army”

Vivian: “I love poems. The ocean brings forth some sort of poetic imagination in me. So then I want to be with the sea, and with the breeze, and just be one with the fishes”
